Name: Yuri Kimishima
Gender: Female
Age: 14
Hair Colour: Dirty Blonde
Eye Colour: Blue-Grey
House Pet: Kokiri - Labrador Mix(Dog)
DOB: 10/27
Personality: Whether or not she'll display tolerance varies depending on what sort of mood she's in. Generally, she'll stay calm, but if you push her too far, you'd better be prepared to go deaf, at the very least. She doesn't much try to 'get to know' people, and lets those who choose to give her a chance know only what is needed; even her friends lack knowledge of the majority of her problems. She tends to be very closed off from society and doesn't mind it much. Human soceity sucks anyway, and it never has been and never will be her concern that other people may think she's weird or a freak of nature. Reality makes most humans freaks of nature anyway. Raised without parents and little contact from her legal guardians, she tends to be pretty independent. Trusting other people is just not her strong point, making it very difficult for her to rely on others, even if she knows she needs help. Her temper is vicious and she does tend to be vengeful, though usually tries to think things through resolve them logically with herself, though there are exceptions(perverts, ruthless snobby pregnant doges, you know the sort). Her reactions can at first be irrational and overly violent, though she'll usually explain or make up for them later. Once befriended, she is quite loyal, including the fact of injuring those who oppose her friends more quickly than those who oppose her.
"Mind over matter; I don't mind and you don't matter... But if you mess with my friends, I'm kicking your ass!"
Family: -None that live with her-
History: When Yuri Kimishima was only eight, nearly nine, her parents died. Her father was murdered...
Yuri was watching TV that night and the news channel blared . "Just minutes ago we received word that a man in his late twenties was murdered in his own car. Police discovered a broken window that seemed to have been punched in, and a pocket knife belonging to the victim jammed into his chest. The man was identified as Ryuu Kimishima. As-"
Yuri pressed the off button on the remote, her heart pounding as she thought, That's impossible! It can't be true! It just can't!
Just then, a crash echoed from the stair-way. Yuri jumped to her feet and ran to the bottom of the stairs, skidding to a halt as she saw the dreadful scene. There lay her mother's body, dead and sitting in a pool of it's own blood. The older of Yuri's two dogs came to her side. The Shetland Sheepdog looked at the non-living body of Natsumi Kimishima. The scent of warm blood reached the seven year old dog's nose. She wheeled and sped out the doggie door. Yuri looked in horror at the little door as it flapped back into place as the white tipped tail disappeared from sight. Yuri swung the door open and rushed out after the dog.
As Yuri got out of the house, she saw that the cars weren't in order. In fact, they were very scattered. Traffic was backed up... She ran out into the street and picked up a small red collar with white paw prints on it. It was her dog's collar... She assumed that her dog had been hit by one of the many cars, and despite the fact that there was no dead body in sight, she guessed the dog was dead. Nothing else seemed logical.
Tears ran down Yuri's cheeks. At so young and fragile an age, she could not stand it. Before now, death had been a thing that seemed so distant. As if it lied in another life-time entirely, over some far off horizon, in some distant, untamed world. Never once had she thought that such a piece of despair could be waiting just around the corner. This made her see things in a new light, or rather, darkness. Reality struck. This world that seemed oh so perfect wasn't any where near it. Pain and death were dominate over all else.
Yuri ran off the street, the dog collar clutched in her right hand. She ran far, through her neighborhood, passing many of her classmates' homes. Yuri ran into the woods, but tired quickly, as young children do when running. When she did stop running she sat down with her back against a tree. Tears still flowing from her eyes like cascading waters, she pulled her legs against her chest. The silence broke when Yuri heard a twig snap. She lifted her head to see a black wolf staring at her with it's golden eyes. Somehow, his gaze was not threatening, but rather... Comforting? Still, it was only common sense for a young child to fear a wild animal.
As the animal approached, fear took over Yuri. She froze, hearing the sound of her own heartbeat in her ears. She was dead, or as good as dead. Marked to join her parents and dog. And due to her own worthless emotion of sorrow at the sight of death. When you run, terrors just chase you more, she thought, panicked. The wolf took little to no note of her fear, and laid down beside her. It seemed to fall asleep. Yuri however, felt weak. Fear had sapped whatever had remained of her energy. She passed out against the tree...
When dawn arrived more wolves had come. A silver female, and a few pups. At first Yuri feared them, but over the short time it took for her to realize they were friendly, she developed names for them. The large black male wolf was Amaroq, the silver female was Moonlight, the black pup with a splash of white on his muzzle was Kapu, for his resemblance to one of her favorite book characters... A light grey male was Dust Fur, the others were Dread, Cascades, and Kin. Then there was a mangy looking wolf who seemed insecure in the pack...For this Yuri called him Jello.
Yuri's supreme dislike for Jello grew as rapidly as her love of the other wolves. She came to the wolves every day after school, leaving it a secret from her classmates and remaining family. Yuri was not in foster care thanks to blood relatives that lived near by, but she was always alone at home. She had to learn to cook, wash clothes, and all that stuff your mommy does for you all on her own. Her technical parental guardians came to be her maternal grandparents, though they live near by, they do not live with her.
This may possibly be what made her heartless and lacking of mortality. Regardless, the people she knew were wise enough to steer clear of her when she was ticked off.... Except Takeshi Saehara, he was punched and kicked many-a-time, and still is that stupid!
As that year progressed, all seemed fine... Until Jello went rotten, more so than before. He had bit into Yuri's arm. Yuri winced. At her first chance, she ran, as any 9 year old would upon being bitten by anything other than a lizard. The smell of human blood told the other wolves what had happened. They, for this reason, killed Jello. When Yuri returned, she was a bit shocked. She had thought she was a bad judge of character, but apparently this wasn't so. She had learned a good deal of the language of wolves, so it was easy for them to explain the condition to Yuri, or as they call her, Lavender Pup. She had also studied enough to know that wolves are to be outcast or slaughtering for injuring a pup.
Lavender Pup is a name of scent and sight that the wolves created for her. Lavender, for the scent of lavender flowers she had, though so faint that only a dog or wolf or cat would actually take note of it. Lavender stands for sorrow and tragedy, according to several sources, and among this group of wolves. Pup, simply for her being young.
By the time almost a year had passed, she was able to speak full wolf language. Both of posture and song, and of barks and yelps as well. One day when she was roaming the forest, she came across a drunken hunter. He held his rifle up, a dazed look in his eyes, and pulled the trigger. Yuri closed her eyes in fear, but when she opened her eyes, there was no deadly wound, or drunken man. The man had run, that was easy to tell...But,the bullet.... "Amaroq!" Yuri cried, her voice shrill and weak seeming. She collapsed beside her wolf father. He had given his life for her and jumped in front of the gun's bullet, aware of it's danger. He had selflessly given his life as an alpha male for his human daughter, a child not even of his own species or blood.
This act was so unthinkable. Yuri had lived to be with Amaroq...What was there now? She cried out, "You idiot! How could you do that? It wasn't worth it!" The tears that ran down her face were the same sort she had cried for the loss of her parents and dog. She continued to complain to the wolf's corpse, with a wider array of curse words than I knew at her age...
Yuri returned to the pack's resting place. She carried the scent of blood... Amaroq's blood. Kapu inched toward her. He knew something was wrong... Horribly wrong. It took only a bit of whimpering from Yuri to tell the other wolves what had happened. So, a new argument grew within the pack....Who is the new alpha?
Moonlight was old, weak from fatigue. She could not lead a pack on her own. Having recently bore pups, she left it to them. A human and five pups could resolve this on their own. Being a house pet was was better than dying. Besides, Moonlight was proud. Her pups had grown strong. They could cope.
Dust Fur barked triumph. No father, no Jello. Her could lead. He was as fit and strong as any of his kin. But Amaroq's look alike son opposed him. Kapu was faster, smarter. He respected his brother, but he was the rightful leader. Dust Fur snarled. He wanted the power, the throne.
Kapu lashed out with his claws. You cannot! Father taught you nothing of it!
Dust Fur cuffed his brother's ear. Nothing of what? I know how to lead!
Kapu bit into his brother's scruff. There is more to it than just that!
Dust Fur tore away from his brother, blood dripping from the back of his neck. He lunged, but Kapu did as well. Kapu soon had his writhing brother pinned to the ground, struggling to get up. Dust Fur finally settled and pinned his tail against his stomach. This posture said, I give up. You win.
That was enough. Kapu let Dust Fur up. He dipped his head to his new follower. You shall be beta male.
Dread shook his head. "This won't do. You aren't even a year old. Mother should still lead."
Cascade, half-blind with her pale blue eyes, agreed. "We can't be led by our own littermates. It just isn't right."
Kin, too timid to make his own opinion, sided with his brother and sister. The three argued, but Moonlight silenced them. "If you think Kapu is not a worthy leader, then leave. Those of us who trust him will stay."
Her words had been an empty threat. She did not truly want her pups to leave, but they took her seriously. Dread flicked his tail. "Fine. We'll go. C'mon, Cascade, Kin."
The three left, and Moonlight barked, "They'll be back. I tell you, they will."
Seasons passed, but Moonlight's prediction didn't. The pack remained purely of her, Dust Fur, and Kapu... And the one human member, Lavender Pup. But this didn't last. For one day, a new scent wafted through the air. She-wolf scent.
Kapu and Dust Fur went out looking, and Yuri followed. She had the habit of doing this. Following Kapu just for the sake of being around him He was, after all, like a brother to her. What they found was a stunning tawny-and-silver she-wolf. Around Kapu and Dust Fur's age.
She was, indeed, their age. She had become tired of watching over her parent's newest cubs and wanted her own to care for. So she had left their lands. Basic knowledge it is, that only an alpha female is meant to mate. The alpha female chooses who has pups, who doesn't That's pretty much her job. And she is usually the one to have pups. So if this she-wolf's mother didn't want her having pups, she wouldn't have pups. It was that simple.
Both Dust Fur and Kapu were interested in this she-wolf. By right Kapu would get the first shot, but Dust Fur stepped forward anyway. Kapu demonstrated his authority and pinned his beta male to the ground, snarling. Dust Fur saw his brother's logic, and submitted, That was how it worked. Kapu had the first try, though in the end a female chooses her mate more so than the male chooses her.
The female walked by them both, flicking her tail. Yuri watched, getting vague and sickening ideas as to what was going on. The she-wolf studied the two males. She made awkward movements to startled them, anger them. She was testing them. Who'd be a better father? Who was stronger? She simply had to know it all. it would be a year before they were meant to mate. Wolves reach maturity at two years. But the more she knew, the sooner she could begin bonding with her ideal mate, the better off she'd be.
Kapu seemed more infatuated with the female. He was the one to bark for her name. She said she was Tawnypond. That made sense. She was silver like still water, but had tawny markings. Golden eyes stared back at Kapu.
Kapu continued to speak, with posture and barks. Bowing his head and giving a friendly bark he had asked, "Tawnypond, would you seek to join the Lunar Wolves?"
She did not reply. He turned to go, signaling for Yuri and Dust Fur to follow. Tawnypond followed as well. The answer was yes. She would be a part of the Lunar Wolf Pack.
Upon Tawnypond's arrival at camp, Moonlight departed. Kapu whimpered for her to stay, but she would not. There was another female to keep top rank, and she desired the power. She would find it else where.
Kapu found no comfort in his mother's reassuring licks. He wanted her to stay and not go. Neither did he find comfort in his brother's eagerness to hunt, or Tawnypond's feisty behavior. No father. No mother. And most of his wolf kin gone. He laid down, resting his head on his paws. They wanted far too much from him. To lead with no one to show him the way was suicide. No wise elder to show him the road he must follow, he felt lost.
A quiet whimper reached his ears. "It's okay. Amaroq is still with us. Your instincts and ancestors will guide you."
The speech of elders, but from where? How? He noticed that Lavender Pup sat right next to him, looking at something beyond the trees. Had she said this? Another whimper confirmed it. "You can, Kapu. And you will. I believe in you, and so do Dust Fur and Tawnypond. We all do."
Kapu sat up, licking his human sister's cheek. How could a young human have such confidence for him when he, the wolf of wisdom, did not? Surely there was a reason for the human being here, and helping him through might be part of it. A human's ways of supporting seemed to be what he needed. Hunting he would doubt his ability in, playing he was too concerned for... But the reassurance the human gave him would help him. He stood up, agreeing to go hunt with Dust Fur. Tawnypond rose to her paws.
Yuri took note of their stance and assumed on staying put. She would have simply scared their prey and was best left behind anyway. Kapu barked, "Come."
Yuri ignored him, assuming he spoke to Dust Fur or Tawnypond. His fur brushed against her, and he made it clear he spoke to Lavender Pup. Yuri whimpered, "I lack the strength and ability, the speed and stealth."
Kapu snorted. "And I lack leadership skills, but we make up for eachothers faults. We have herding skills... You have human intelligence and your father's pocket knife. We'll make due."
Yuri pulled the mentioned blade from her pocket. The blade it's self was silver, all blood from her father's murder cleaned away. The handle was ivory, gold writing showed her father's initials: R.K.
It was an old style knife, longer than was recently standard. The blade and handle were the same length. Yuri shrugged. "What good will an old murder weapon do us?"
Kapu gave her an amused glance. "It can bring down a human, maybe it can bring down a buck." He lowered his ears, saying he didn't mean that in a cruel way.
Sure enough Yuri was crying, but laughing at the same time. She held the blade near Kapu's nose. "And maybe it can take down a wolf, eh? If the handler could, and I can't."
"You most certainly can, and we'll prove it to you." With that Kapu walked off. Yuri got to her feet and joined the line the wolves walked in. At the sound of twigs snapping she shifted position to see what may lie ahead. A deer, but a doe, belly at normal size. Not baring fawns too soon, if at all. Kapu and the others fanned out in a semi-circle, backing the deer against a tree.
Yuri made sure to avoid them, and climbed a different tree to watch. Kapu may have made her come, but that didn't mean she'd actually help. Little girls don't hunt, and that's just standard fact. She knew their hunting style. They'd keep the deer trapped there, and then one of them would strike it's neck and make the kill. They'd stay around here and eat from the kill until it was gone. Yuri looked around, checking for any landmark that might help her remember the place, but found instead a foe. A snake. she backed away, farther toward the limb's end. This was bad.
Meanwhile, on the ground, Kapu had tried to strike at the deer's neck, but missed. His failure gave the doe an opening to escape through. Kapu and the other two made up for the blunder with speed, and corned the deer once more. Kapu breathed heavy, annoyed by the failed attempt. He heard a snapping, like breaking wood. Looking up, he saw Lavender Pup's peril. She'd tried to stat out of the way and put herself in danger.
Just then, the snake who by now felt threatened, lunged at Yuri, attempting to sink it's fangs into her wrist. She jerked away, but found only more trouble of it. Falling out of the tree was just as bad. With a sharp thud, she landed. But the pain was minor, surprisingly. In fact she'd landed on something soft. She opened her eyes, seeing the doe, still standing strong beneath her. That was good and bad all at once. She'd had something to break her fall, but now she'd be throw off and trampled by the doe.
The doe twisted it's head to get a view of what had landed on it. The gleam in it's eyes scared Yuri. She got into a proper sitting position and clung to the beast's neck. If she could hold on long enough for the wolves to kill it, she might survive.
True as the guess was, Kapu would not attack. He feared harming Yuri with his attack. He shared in Lavender Pup's fear, but in a chicken way. His concern stopped him from seeing that a few scratches were far better than death. Yuri sighed, "Of course, of all times for him to be clouded with emotion! What is it with these wolves, causing trouble that way?"
The doe kicked it hide legs in the air, trying to knock the human off. Yuri tightened her grip, feeling blood in the palm of her hand. She must not have closed the pocket knife. "Oh, of course, I'm an idiot," she said, tightening her left arm around the doe's neck and taking the pocket knife in her right. She drove the blade into the neck, trying to guess where the jugular vein should be. Blood spurted out. The doe collapsed. Yuri got away from it at the first chance. The doe gave an awkward shake, and then fell still.
Yuri didn't stay on her feet for long. Kapu tackled her, licking away the deer blood, and licking the blood from the cut on Yuri's hand. His concern was boundless, knowing how weak humans are physically. Yuri pushed him off, dazed from the experience. Kapu calmed down, panting. "I told you, we make up for eachothers faults."
Yuri cried out, annoyed and yet amused, "Oh, enough with the 'I told you so's!"
As time went on more wolves joined the pack, other died or left. Dust Fur was always at his brother's side for serious work. He more or less lead the pack whenever Kapu left, aside from Tawnypond who frequently reminded him on such occasions that she was his leader, not vice versa. The first litter these alphas bore consisted only of one pup, due to a terrible famine that swept over their territory as well as a few the surrounding pack's territories. Tawnypond spent all her time on that one pup, who had no playmates due to being the only pup at that time. Yuri was entrusted as their pup-sitter, which was fine with her because it meant she didn't have to go on hunts with them. The pup proved to have a lot of spunk, and plenty of energy, despite being born during famine. Thus she was named Spiritfire. She had a striking resemblance to her father, which insured that she'd receive good ranking as she grew. Yuri became her playmate, to what extent a human can, tug of war with scraps of deer pelt and such. Spiritfire matured nicely and gained a beta rank, though she was not her uncle's mate.
Time passed and a new scent, wolf-scent, male, came to be noticable around the boarders, but never inside. The male seemed to respect staying in the no-wolf zone if he was a loner. On rare occasions other scents came to be noticeable, but this young male's was the most common. It almost seemed as if he meant to enter, but was too nervous to. Kapu found that unity within his Clan was best restored by circling the territory and marking boarders as a group. This made the cold winter's thtat brought less food more bearable. As winter of the third year Yuri spent with the wolves fell in deeper, and drew nearer the fourth, Kapu's yearling daughter, Spiritfire, was the best at tracking prey; her ears were always pricked and her nose always twitching. One day while making of of their boarder rounds, the pack stumbled across the young male who's scent had been apparent for quite some time, walking freely in the no-wolf zone. He turned in a whirl towards the oncoming pack. He sniffed the air, and snarled. They had human scent, but it was stale; whenever they'd been near a human, it had been at least a day ago. This should have been comforting to know, but instead it made him think they were tender, human-trained wolves who would take kindly to no trespassers. This provoked fear. The fur on his neck bristled, and the rest of his pelt followed, making him look bigger than he was. Kapu barked to his packmates, "Stay!" And with that he went out into the no-wolf zone to greet the newcomer.
The young male lifted his muzzle up and howled, "Oh, let Luna of the Moon guide them away from the upwalkers who teach them so! Entering the no-wolf zone is forbidden unless to take in a new member, and surely he jests if he says that is his cause!"
Kapu tilted his head to one side, his golden gaze seeming amused. The pup was yowling to Kapu's ancestor to guide Kapu out of the path of an human who that ancestor held as a important piece of that which she had in the living world. And, what's more, he yowled to her as though she were a god! Kapu let a bark-laugh escape his muzzle. "Surely you jest! Praying to that which bore pups that led down to me! To Luna of the Moon! Mother of Blazewing, who's pup's consisted of my father's father! Oh ho! That is a sight, indeed!"
The young male bared his teeth, lowering his head to the ground, and started to snarl once more, "Luna of the Moon would not have kin of your likes! Upwalker lovers!"
Kapu snorted. "The the 'Luna' you know must not be that whom came from the Americas, must not be that who's father was of Spain in times when no human could count animals, must not be the she-wolf who protects nature's elements. For the true Luna is indeed my ancestor, and indeed wants the 'upwalker', as you call her, around. And thus, your Luna and mine must be completely different, or at least what we know of her different."
The young male clawed at the ground, half embarassed that this older male knew the stories so well. "Well, surely you kid me. Perhaops we beleive in the same Luna, but what use would she have for an upwalker?"
Kapu dipped his head. "Not even them upwalker knows the whole of it. The most I can tell you is things are unstable now. Luna's old rival is said to be back, and a few things in the human world are frayed as well. No human would trust a true wolf, and so a human was needed. Not to mention humans have better medical care than we of the forest have. through these hard times, surely that will come useful."
The young grey-and-white male could not believe it. "No! Celestrial was killed during Luna's lifetime! You can't possibly mean him?"
Kapu lowered his head. "I do not know. It may be him, it likely is. It could be other things. Disasters and beasts are so frequent in our world, it's hard to tell what ones are the aim of Luna's human counterpart. I cannot say. I only know what my father told me of it. Now, off of that topic. What are you called."
"Siren," the male replied. His flicked his tail to the right. His ears were pinned back, If all this male had told him was true, he had no reason to fear what claimed to be the true Lunar Wolves, or their upwalker friend. Kapu gave a light, painless bit on the top of Siren's muzzle. Siren bit onto Kapu's lower jaw. He had accepted being lower than Kapu and joining their pack.
Spiritfire and Siren became close, as best friends. Upon Yuri's return a few days later, she wasn't sure whether to be digusted by what this made her think, or be happy for Spiritfire, Kapu told her of how the male had come into the pack, and even Yuri had to admit it was a bit funny. Tawnypond watched the two younglings with the utmost interest, and Kapu asked of her why she did so. She laughed, claiming she could see them just as clearly as he could, he was simply not seeing the whole picture, perhaps ignoring a part he did not want to see. Yuri nodded, aware that father's never much wanted their daughters to grow up. Amaroq still treated her like a puppy, whenever his spirit was near. And Kapu still wanted to beleive his daughter would never not be his puppy.
The next wolf to come into the pack was a large male, older than Kapu. His multi-shaded grey fur contained not even the smallest speck of pure white in it. His murky eyes were like tainted waters, through which you cannot see the bottom. In his case, the bottom was whatever he really thought. Kapu had a strange feeling about this power hungry male. He warned Yuri sternly, "Do not confide in him, I would never dream of him knowing who we really are. He is not really one of us, whether or not he lives in the pack." To which Yuri replied, "I don't like him. He seems arrogant, and power hungry beyond beleif. You don't need to tell me twice... You scarcely needed to tell me once; I will not confide in him so much as my human name, for not even that would I trust him with."
Kapu wasn't so sure that Yuri's lack of trust towards others was a good thing, but in this case it did serve well. However, it proved to not matter whether anyone told the male, called Arcana, of anything. He didn't ask, and that unnerved Kapu all the more. It was like he already knew where Kapu took Yuri away from the pack's main camp, and why. Worse, Spiritfire had claimed he had a few times left shortly after Kapu and Yuri, heading in the same general direction. This concerned Kapu so deeply that he asked Tawnypond, Siren, Dust Fur, and Spiritfire to hole the male back in camp, with whatever reasons they could come up with. He needn't have even the slightest chance of learning of Yuri ability to take Yuri's form, or of the pendants that carried only enough power to give the user a few tastes of it, enough to awaken it within themselves. If Arcana were to know that flight, mind reading, communing with the dead, and all those things could be obtained that way... there was no doubt Arcana would try it. And if Kapu's suspicions were right, those peices of metal and gemstone would awaken something within Arcana, but it wouldn't be good.
But try as he may, he could not always keep track of Arcana. Arcana did get away from time to time, and he once noticed where Kapu and lavender Pup hid the silly necklace he saw them mess with so often. He watched, and when he was sure they weren't going to move it, he ran back to came, catching a rabbit on the way back to cover up for where he'd been. Shortly before sunset, Lavender Pup left to get back to her human home before nightfall. The wolves settled in for rest. Most of them would not sleep the whole night through; they'd wake up off and on, check around camp, eat from the kill they'd recently brought down, go back to sleep, and likely repeat. Arcana knew that Spiritfire, whom he bullied to try to get her beta rank, would wake up and do this, thrashing the kill about to strengthen her neck muscles. Once every wolf was asleep, Arcana dashed out of camp. He hurried, for fear that one may awake and come looking for him.
He found his prize. the place at the bottom of a tree where he'd seen them bury the pendant earlier. He clawed at the ground, finding bones here. "Digusting," he muttered. "This must be where they put their dead as well. They probably thought the carrion stench would keep intruders away from it." He shrugged. he'd seen the things that pendant let the human girl do, and if getting that same power meant digging through some bones and dead bodies, so be it. they were dead. What was the harm in this?
Finally he found the spot among the tree roots where the pendant was, he took it up in his jaws, unsure of what to do next. However, he needn't do anymore. the pendant responded automatically, flashing before his eyes all that had happened during his life as Clestrial, up to Luna murdering him. He felt the sharp pain of teeth in his neck. He yelped in pain, the pendant falling out of his grip. He ran, back to camp, not even bothering to rebury the pendant. he had dropped it so fast that it had not had the chance to reawrd him with any ability; it's pain first, then pleasures such as the powers which he did unjustly seek. As his paws barely touched the ground in his panicked run, he could not help but think of how Lavender Pup, the strange human female, could become the she-wolf he'd seen in those visions. 'Think that makes her an evil, betraying pregnant dog, no more, no less.' He disregarded his own past treachery the visions told of, and the treachery of digging up a pack's burial place. He seemed to beleive that was was okay, but his murder unjust.
The following April, Kapu and Tawnypond had another litter. Food had been more available this year than the past couple, and this litter was of a considerable size. They were not particularly attractive pups, most of which were plain dark grey, two of which had sand and tawny coloured markings, and one of wich that was simple light grey. It's regretable that only three out of six pups survived, but that is the world of animals; it is a good one, but only the strongest survive, and sometimes not even they. One of each colour survived. A dark grey male called Heather Storm; a grey, tawny, and sand coloured female named Freesia Shore; and a light grey female named Lichen Fur.
Had all been justly gone about in the pack, there would have been four pups that survived from the litter. The one that would have remained was a talkative male; grey, tawny, and sand coloured. He, however, was slaughtered by Arcana. In wolf soceity, having strong, healthy pups symbolizes power and rank. Arcana's growing desire to take over this pack made him very frustrated at Kapu's having a healthy litter. The day progressed as any other, and with yuri not there for the day yet, due to school, Arcana was left behind as the pup sitter, something Kapu and Tawnypond, along with their other more loyal packmates would come to regret.
Arcana didn't just kill the pup. He took out his rage on the pup, who had simply attempted to make a game of chasing the older male's tail; a common pup;py game that proper pup-sitters would have tolerated and taken part in agreeably. As the pup nipped Arcana's tail, he was thrown to the ground, the weight of the older wolf pressuring against his rib cage. He whimpered, pinning his tail against his belly in submission. Arcana bit into his scruff, and threw the pup a few yards, to bash against a tree. The pup cried out in pain and tried to crawl away, but Arcana was on him again in the blink of an eye. He lifted the pup once more and shook his head. The way he gripped the pup wasn't the gentle way a wolf lifts pup, but the way he would if it was a rabbit he was hunting. The flesh of the scruff tore and the pup fell to the ground again, in too much pain and dismay to whimper.
Arcana pricked his ears at the snapping of twigs. it sounded like a female was approaching. The weight was too light to be male. But the pack wouldn't come back without Kapu and his other concern was a human. He saw no reason to worry of the sound. He came over the pup once more and raked his blunt claws over the defenceless thing's eyes, blinding it. Whimpers came again. Arcana scented something. A garden flower? He snarled. The wind must have been blowing the scent from a human garden to the woods. The scent of blood was too thick for him to tell the source was so much closer than that.
He let the pup get to it's paws, padding slowly in random directions, blood falling down into the grass from both it's neck and face. Arcana slammed his paw against the young pup's head, and it went flying, limp like a rag doll, against another tree at the outskirts of the clearing. Blood poured from it's wounds, including a new scrape from the tree's rough bark. The malicious grin that the older male wore was unseen to his victim as he came closer, whimpering sincere-sounding apologies to the pup. The pup backed against the tree, unsure what was happening. Then he felt it. Teeth in his throat. then all was black. it was over. Arcana pulled away and the pup fell limp to the ground. It shook, then fell still. Arcana had a triumphant look. He heard movement again, but it was quicker, more reckless. He whirled around, but saw nothing. No Kapu, not tawnypond. No one. But now her knew what he was smelling before. Lavender!
He waited impatiently until the hunting patrol returned. They were not lead back by Kapu, but Lavender Pup. But now she appeared as the wolf Arcana had seen in the visions, the wolf who'd killed him in a past life. He snarled.
Kapu stalked out from behind her, sniffing the air. He made his way to the body of his son, lifeless on the ground. He nuzzled the corpse for a minute then turned on Arcana. He snarled viciously, "You vile traitor!"
Arcana could not deny that what he had done was immoral, but he didn't care. He lowered his head, snarling back. "Your son took your beating, but not hers!" He lunged for Lavender Pup, but got nothing but a mouth full of feathers. She used her wings as a sheild, knowing he'd used most of his strength on torturing the pup. He knew she'd watched and run to Kapu with the news. Why hadn't she stopped him then? Had she been horrified by it? He hoped so. If it caused her emotional pain, he felt she deserved it. Before he could get in another attack, the whole pack was around him, waiting for a a chance to sink their teeth into him and tear him apart. Arcana was by no means stupid. He slipped past, getting bitten by Siren as he tried to escape. He jerked from Siren's grip. Arcana didn't care that this tore his ear. Better that than his life. He ran into the no-wolf zone, where they couldn't follow him.
Kapu and Tawnypond mourned for the pup more than they had for the other two that died. This death had been so uncalled for. And it was all Arcana's fault. Kapu knew that his human sister had seen more than she'd said, from how much her fear-scent stung his nose at the time. He only wished he knew the whole story, but he knew better than to nag her about it. She'd probably get the impression that he was accusing her of not acting fast enough and it being her fault the pup had died for that reason. Kapu sighed. Yuri may have felt that way already, even without him saying anything. He couldn't mention it to her or tawnypond, or anyone else.
As that year progressed The three remaining pups grew strong and left the den to learn their hunting skills. This litter was raised with a human around and lacked the common wolf instinct to fear them. They had to be taught manually that not all humans could see a wolf as a companion. That most saw them as stupid beasts and would scream or kill them on first sight. It wasn't hard for them to believe that not all humans could be like Lavender Pup, as they knew not all wolves were like Arcana. Most wolves they'd met were considerate, compassionate, unified... All that Arcana was not. They'd met Lavender Pup, who considered them her equals, spoke to them, and seemed to think of them as her own kind with another physical layout. It wasn't at all difficult to believe that both humans and wolves could be a of a rare sort. Not after watching a wolf slaughter an innocent pup, anyway. Not to mention that all their father said of humans may be honest even in Lavender Pup's case, seeing as she was no more than a human cub herself and likely wouldn't fully know her own personality for many moons. That much they couldn't pass over, no matter how many times Kapu explained that a human is a cub for longer than a wolf lives. they still thought that silly. Near immortal animals! Ha! Humans were weird, sure. And they smelled funny, walked funny, had no fur or claws, spoke in an almost cryptic tongue... But nearly immortal? That was very hard to believe. They didn't believe that Lavender Pup was possibly 48 seasons(12 years) old. That was longer than most captive raised wolves lived, much less a true wild one.
Kapu let it slide. His pups would soon learn of it themselves from lack of wisdom if they truly did not beleive him on the matter. Then they'd know for themselves and accept it, and if that didn't come to pass, he was alpha. His beliefs would naturally be more heard than those of his pups and them thinking differently would do the pack as a whole no harm.
Kapu was right, of course. When the litter had been grown nicely, fine tuned into swift, clever hunters, they had to admit Lavender Pup had change very little. Her changes the simple ones of a human. No overdone increase in size. A few inches, yes, but not the doubling of size the pups had gone through. They had to reluctantly admit that their father had been right about humans. Kapu admitted that Lavender Pup had been much more of a pup when he met her, that humans did grow at a decent rate, but held firm that they lived longer than any wolf could dream to live, physically at least.
That year had passed peacefully enough. A few times scenting Arcana had ruffled the pack's fur a bit, but nothing of great interest besides Kapu's pups, now yearlings. Prey had been nicely portioned, but that would come and go. As the pack passed into the next year, Kapu admitted regretfully that there was certainly something between Spiritfire and Siren. Tawnypond agreed, restating that she'd tried telling him that before. Yuri couldn't help but find this amusing. Tawnypond still recalled the instant bond between the two wolves, that she had so simply pointed out to her mate, who had ignorantly denied it at the time.
It didn't take the two very long to come to a decision; they were leaving the pack. The news sent shock through their kin by blood and pack alike. Dust Fur protested, "You can't leave! We need you!"
Siren yowled impatiently, "Why ever would you give up alpha rank!?"
Spiritfire barked snappily, "You can't just abandon us!"
Yuri, like Dust Fur, protested that Kapu and Tawnypond couldn't leave. But they'd made up their minds. They were leaving, and no barks, yowls, yips, growls, or ever mournful howls could stop them. They said the pack was Spiritfire's and her mate's, which caused Siren to shuffle his paws nervously. Dust Fur got to his paws, Yuri at his side. The two both demanded through indignant growls to be part of Kapu and Tawnypond's new pack, where ever they may go. Kapu denied them that. "Spiritfire needs your knowledge of the land, Dust Fur. And you counsel and medical help, Lavender Pup. For now at least, we cannot take either of you with us."
The two siblings of Kapu were highly insulted. What sort of excuse was this? A bad one! Spiritfire was well old enough to know the land herself, and clean a few scrapes and gashes. Dust Fur was a valuable allie, true. And a few human medicines and bandages would do no harm a time or two. But those weren't things Spiritfire really needed. They'd make it easier on her, yes, but surely she knew from the start that leadership was a difficult task. And as for counsel, she didn't need that from any human. Perhaps Kapu had, but that was a different story entirely. He had been a pup with the human there through a time he lost his parents, as he had been there when the human lost hers. Spiritfire, however, could lead naturally without such draw backs. Despite however much they protested, Kapu insisted they stay with Spiritfire's pack.
They next dawn the two alphas left, letting letting the moon set on their time as rulers of the Lunar Wolves. What Kapu had failed to see is that a true leader is raised one, not born one. Spiritfire had been neglected the knowledge needed, and so while she had the territory that was sacredly Luna's and Fang's from days long past, she and Siren could never truly be a a Lunar alphas. It was still Kapu's burden, but he had accomplished his point. Spiritfire and Siren could have pups and live royally, able to always be the one pair in the pack to have pups if so they wished. he had wanted their happiness and his own freedom at once, and this had seemed the best way to do it. Spiritfire insisted that Kapu take one very special part of the territory, else wise she couldn't let him leave. The Lunar Stream, he must take. Spiritfire told him outright she didn't know why he had to have that place, despite how much she wanted it herself. Just that she felt that he must. It was the moon's will, the creator's will, or perhaps Luna or Demonic Moon's will. For whatever reason, she felt it and trusted that instinct faithfully.
Most the others chose to rarely contact other packs, even Kapu's, but Yuri wasn't a wolf and didn't care for that rule so much as that. She was human and none could dare attack her sanely for crossing boarders, because she was not bound by them as the wolves were. She didn't know where exactly Kapu's territory was, but she did know her way to the Lunar Stream. A nature freak as she was, the best scenery she'd yet seen in the forest was definitely a place she'd know, considering Kapu had been fond of it as well. If that was a fragment of his territory, it would be a simple way to contact him to go there and try howling for him. Determined, she did just that. Kapu's reply was concerned. At first he asked of everyone's well-being and the like, but the progressed to warn of Arcana's increased appearances. Whatever had kept the traitor silent had passed and he was now a bigger threat to them than ever before. Yuri gave a sort of growl-howl reply. "If you cared so much of that, why did you leave? And why did you leave Dust Fur and I behind?"
He explained, sounding almost ashamed, "She needs his strength, she needs your powers and tactics. Altogether, she needs the strength and unique traits you both have. Believe me, I would have taken you if I did not believe that with all my soul."
"That's wrong!" she protested. "If she needs us so badly, then she needs you too, more than us! You are her father, mentor, companion! Don't you understand!?"
Kapu knew that to some degree his human sister was right, but he had to try to make another sort of love very clear to her. "You may never choose to know the joy of a mate and offspring. That may not bring you joy at all, may not be your calling. But as for wolves, that brings us together, keeps us alert and content all the same. Alphas are supposed to be the only ones to mate in most cases, and I had to let my twitterpated daughter have her turn on the throne anyway. An alpha pair, after all, are closer than most other mates ever are."
The reply he got was less violent toned, but still not happy. "Yes, Kapu. All that I understand. I understand that you left her because you love her. But couldn't you have just stepped down from being alpha instead? Leaving seemed so drastic, you must understand, from my point of view all this is pretty ridiculous. but I see still why you left Dust Fur, not to sound thick-headed. But why me? I do her no good. I'm just a 13 year old girl with no particular talents and the ability to turn into a winged wolf. If I was just a second late in transforming, that could be the end. I really serve her no purpose. And I don't stay here all the time. Just visit almost daily. It's not like I can always protect her."
Kapu fell silent for a moment, then finally howled back. "Your are human, yes, and young. And Luna's human counterpart, indeed, But you are so much more that you could never see on your own. Likely no human will ever see, save for one, Demonic Moon's counterpart if all goes well. But I will explain that another day, when it indeed is the topic of the hour."
"No human? That seems a bit harsh." She replied blankly.
"Your 'friends' as you call them may not know the whole story and can't see the whole picture, it's sad to admit. But, if you choose to tell them of us, Lavender Pup Yuri, that would be your choice. Free will and all, which you and every other living being were granted."
&------ Please note this complete phail of a character is from when I was in fifth grade. I'm simply not interested in bothering to make a new one.
